QUESTIONS TO ASK
There are no right or wrong questions to ask your doctor. You may find it helpful to have a friend or relative with you when you see your doctor. You should know that doctors are often very busy. However, you should expect to understand the choices you have.
You should also not be afraid to make notes or to ask your doctor if you can tape-record the discussion. You should also ask your doctor to explain any words or phrases you do not understand. Remember it is best to make any decision together with your doctor.
Below are some examples of questions you may want to ask.
Questions before your condition is definitely known:
• What do you think is the matter with me?
• Could my symptoms be caused by more than one condition?
• What tests do you need to do to confirm the diagnosis?
• How long will it be before I know the results?
• Will it make any difference if I go private and how much will it cost?
• Where do I need to go for any tests?
• Where can I go to get support?
Questions to ask when your condition is diagnosed:
• Will you explain what is wrong with me?
• What treatment options do I have?
• What will happen if I decide not to have any treatment?
• What treatment do you recommend and why?
• How long will I need to wait?
• Can I have a second opinion?
• What are the benefits?
• What does the treatment involve?
• What are the risks?
• What can I do to help make the treatment a success?
• Do I need to change or stop my medication?
• Have you performed this treatment before?
• How long will I spend in hospital?
• How soon will I be able to return to my normal activities?
• Can I have written information to take away with me?
• Where can I get more information if I want it?
• Where can I go to get support from people who understand?
